So you spent hours—weeks—months of your life knitting that accessory. Perhaps you made a cabled shlanket, or maybe a lace cowl. Possibly, you created a beaded or brioche shawl.
Whatever it is, it’s gorgeous. It’s your new favorite. You have decided you are going to wear it every single day for the rest of this season and the next.
However, you don’t have the right shirt. Once you find the shirt, you realize you could really use a new pair of pants or skirt to level up the new shirt into an awesome outfit.
Has anyone else ever played this game?
I’d like to call it A Knitter’s Halloween, or AKH for the sake of brevity (and fun!).
I love Halloween costumes—finding them, making (or buying) them, then wearing them to show them off! For us knitters, though, AKH is a year-round phenomenon. We should always feel comfortable investing in an amazing outfit that allows our new knits to shine.
I doubt Dave Ramsey has kept up with my posts since my WIP Snowball/Ramsey homage. Hopefully he didn’t just read that last sentence about investing in amazing outfits! We all function within our own budgets, so take what I say and apply it to your life and situation, obviously. Good, now that my disclaimer is out of the way, let’s get back to it.
I have said (and I have heard others say), on more than one occasion: “I thought about buying that [item other than yarn], but it cost as much as a Sweater Quantity! I’ll save my money for the next yarn haul.”
Do you ever think about money in terms of “Sweater Quantity”? Goodness, I do. I will go out on a limb here and suggest that one quality outfit that showcases your incredible knit accessories is worth purchasing, even if it costs a Sweater’s Quantity price ($SQ). Granted, with online shopping and discount fashion stores, I would hazard a guess that you could find an outfit for less than a $SQ.
As we enter Halloween week, remember to enjoy your new or reimagined outfits.
Also, I suggest “dressing up” as Lorelai Gilmore—you get to wear all of the knits in your closet, drink coffee all day, and say funny things really fast. Oh, and eat a whole box of Pop Tarts!!
When we exit the World’s Halloween, be sure to keep the spirit of the season in your yarny heart. Feel free to celebrate AKH year round.
Those knits deserve a killer outfit. And you deserve to enjoy your knitting.
