My cousin, Charles Wesley Godwin, is a fantastic country singer/songwriter. I enjoy his music so much, and not just because he’s kin. Since his lyrics generally revolve around our home state of West Virginia, I tend to find knitting inspiration in them. This is one of those cases!
Lyrics from the first song on his debut album Seneca, “(Windmill) Keep On Turning,” inspired my new Coffee and a Sunrise Socks pattern.
I love drinking hot coffee while watching a glorious sunrise—any time of the year. These top-down shorty socks incorporate lace techniques and twisted ribbing to depict both coffee cups and the rising sun with its reaching rays. (Or if you prefer—TEA and a sunrise!)
As I have previously discussed, I love knitting lace. The lace techniques I incorporated into these socks are not overly-complicated, making for an engaging yet fun summer knit.
One of my favorite things to play around with when designing socks is the heel! This sock features a reinforced heel. The gusset includes decreases on the bottom of the foot, creating an elegant, strong, and well-fitting heel cup.
Also, I have incorporated a rounded toe for a great fit!
And can we all just take a moment to admire these colorways?! Leading Men Fiber Arts hand-dyed yarn has been on my list of favorites for years! When I began designing these socks, I knew I had to use “Sunny Side Up” for the main sunrise colorway! Then, I decided that “Breaking Ground” would be the perfect rich coffee color. I finished off my color choices with “Moonstone.” A few years ago, I knit an entire cardigan with “Moonstone” and feel deeply in love with the speckly rich purple. Plus, what balances the sun? The moon!
The Coffee and a Sunrise Socks pattern includes video tutorials, charts, and clear written instructions. As always, this pattern has been tech edited and test knit by some really lovely knitters.
This pattern is accessible to an advanced beginner looking to learn a few techniques, but also engaging for the experienced lace knitter.
