As we enter the Easter weekend, I see it as fitting that my Deci Scarf knitting pattern is releasing today.
Have you ever met a person who was simply an amazing human?
Dr. David Deci was thoughtful in everything he did. He genuinely cared about other people—and I mean, everyone! He did his best to raise up all of those around him, and to help anyone within his sphere of possible influence.
He was inspiring, and I’m so grateful that he impacted a season in my family’s life.
Influenced Yarn
After Dr. Deci’s untimely passing last year, I wanted to create a small tribute to him through yarn. This scarf seemed right.
The upward lines link the many rounds and create a strong support system, while featuring all of the component colors equally. The design is simple—though it may appear complex—and is well-balanced. The scarf is knit in-the-round, so it is beautiful from every angle. Add the optional fringe for a splash of fun.
Plus, Dr. Deci always wore the best ties.
I chose Wonderland Yarn’s Mary Ann base in the “Forest Path” and “Thorny Thistle” colorways. The green and purple remind me of a garden—which needs tending and a considerable investment of time, effort, and wisdom in order for it to thrive.
Pick two colorways that support each other, and knit your own scarf to wrap up in when the world gets chilly.
Go Bag Knitting
While not as mindless as a vanilla sock, this scarf was my Go Bag Knitting for the time it took me to finish it. I had to pay just a bit more attention, but there’s a peaceful and reliable rhythm to the knitting.
At approximately 140g of fingering weight knitting, it isn’t an overnight project. But it’s no sweater or blanket either! This would be an easy project to focus on so as to prepare a light adornment for chillier evenings over the spring and summer. Or… take your time, and have a neck warmer ready for autumn’s eventual extinguishing of the approaching heat. (Assuming you’re hanging out in the northern hemisphere, like me. 💖)
Needles
After the initial few inches of magic loop, I enjoyed using my 9” circulars for this project. They made the tensioning easier to manage, and they let me zoom on through. Magic loop and dpns work throughout as well! The pattern includes some tensioning tips in case you need them.
A little extra
The pattern also includes some suggestions if you would like to make this a scrappy project! Use minis, scraps, self-striping, or a brand-new yarn set… whatever brings you joy.
As always, this pattern has been tech edited and test knit. All instructions are clearly written. Video tutorials are linked in the pattern for additional support.
