During the first weekend in August, I will go anywhere except Buckhannon, WV. For four days, my hometown plays host to “West Virginia’s Largest Yard Sale.”
If they would change that one pesky letter and make it a YARN Sale, this whole discussion would be heading down a very different direction!
As it is, the small yet spirited town becomes congested with maddeningly slow cars ambling up and down the grid, their drivers craning their necks to check out the various wares before committing to precarious parking spots. Most of these two-way streets are generally intended to have one lane for driving and the other lane for parking. Therefore, only venture out into the wilds if you intend to go Salin’—Yard Salin’, that is.
As much as I dislike the temporary driving congestion, I have to admit that the weekend is any bargain hunter’s dream. The county’s Visitors Bureau even has a webpage dedicated to Preparedness Recommendations and a map of Registered Yard Sales!

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore’s Army is full of some of the best characters, and the group’s raison d’être is so inspiring. I had to create socks that used lace, faux cables, and a cool heel to represent the diamonds-in-the-rough students who banded together to reinforce and strengthen each other.
Love Beyond Time Shawls
The shawls were inspired by another one of my other favorite series—Outlander. Claire and Jamie share a Love that transcends even Time. These shawls use an addictive and surprisingly easy technique of Elongated Stitch Cabling. (The pattern does not even call for a cable needle! The included Video Tutorial holds your hand—and needles—through the whole technique.) Whether you are using Fingering or DK, this makes an easy-to-style shawl… OR a fantastic BLANKET! The instructions guide you through how to manage more or fewer panels than the pattern calls for.
