Release Day!!
Friends, today I’m sharing with you (and the world!) a pattern that I have mulled over for a very long time. My newest knitting pattern—It Begins With Socks—is here!!!
Inspiration Fantasy
It begins with absence and desire
It begins with blood and fear
It begins with… A discovery of witches.
Quote from A Discovery Of Witches by Deborah Harkness
The Discovery of Witches books include everything I love in fantasy novels: magic, witches, vampires, history, old books, old castles, chivalry, inspired creatives (aka daemons), daring adventures, and complicated puzzles needing to be solved.
Seriously, friends, if you haven’t read these books and you love fantasy, stop whatever you are doing and read them! (Well, finish reading this post first, then buy the pattern with the awesome discount below, then gather your sock set and needles, and then go read the books while you knit a pair of these super fun socks!!!)
Plus, next week, the fifth book in the series, The Black Bird Oracle, will be released into the world. So let’s all celebrate with new socks!
These top-down socks pay homage to the three fantastical Creatures featured in Deborah Harkness’s All Souls Trilogy.
You will knit a Witch’s Broom down the back of the Leg using simple cable and slipped stitch techniques, followed by a heel flap and gusset. The entire heel is reinforced, and the gusset decreases are on the bottom of the foot, creating a beautiful look and great fit.
Use your own creative (lace) genius throughout the sock to sprinkle in Vampire Bites, and seemingly drop stitches like a Daemon. The pattern sets a framework for how to improvise the mini lace elements throughout your sock, but the finished product will be totally yours. Take notes so both socks are exactly matching, or take my approach and create two unique socks.
In the end, you will bind all three Creatures together through a Braid down the front!
Be the Matthew to my Diana, and take my hand so we can step out into the ever-changing sock future together.
As always with my patterns, this has been tech edited and test knit by some really wonderful people. You will find that the pattern includes both charts and written instructions, as well as video tutorial support on Mountain Song Designs YouTube channel. Linked Video Resources include tutorials on casting on, binding off, and how to knit cables without a cable needle.
This pattern is an intermediate level pattern, but is accessible to an adventurous beginner and beyond.
