I see a skein of yarn the way a sculptor sees a chunk of granite. I know without a doubt that there is a beautiful object lying within. My job as the knitter is simply to recognize what that skein is asking to become, and then knit (and hope I do it justice).
Last year I purchased a skein of sport weight yarn from Must Stash Yarn. For many years I have been a fan of Stacie’s yarn—the colors, the squishy goodness, and the story each colorway tells. Though I have a tub of her fingering weight yarns, both knit and not-yet, I have never sampled the sport weight. I wanted to branch out a bit. I chose the “Daily Eggs” colorway, also a first. It just felt right.
For months I considered what that yarn wanted to grow into. I have to admit that I am delighted with my results.
Pattern Hatched!
When I think of eggs, I think of baskets, Easter, omelets, and new life. Since scrambled eggs don’t feature well in socks, I thought I’d pursue the other ideas!
I decided I wanted a basket that protected an egg bursting with love. Also, I adore cables, but I prefer them when I have as little moving around of stitches as possible! I did not use a cable needle at all on these, and I did not have to do much rearranging of stitches before I knit the cables. (I include video tutorials on how to accomplish needle-less cables in case you’re interested in lazy efficient cables, like I am!)
And you guys…. This sport weight yarn is so deliciously squishy. I felt like I was knitting with marshmallows (in the best way!).
Thick or Thin
You might be thinking, but I can’t/don’t knit socks with sport weight. First of all, try it if you can!! You might be surprised! But also, this pattern contains a super special secret…..
Based on the way the sport weight gauge worked out, the pattern ALSO works for fingering weight!!! You just have to knit a size “larger.” The pattern includes suggestions for knitting these socks with fingering weight.
(That being said, I do think the cables look best on sport.)
Adding Partridge to the Family
I tend not to knit an Eye of Partidge Heel on my socks. However, the basketweave on this sock begged me to include it! The Eye are Partridge is like a mini-basket for a heel flap!!
Woven Around the Toe
The Toe of the sock maintains the basketweave AND is rounded for a lovely fit and finish.
