I am in the process of reorganizing about half of my house. In order to clear out rooms that must be empty by next week, I first have to deal with the mass of “I’ll get to it later” clutter that has accumulated in more spaces than I’m willing to admit.
I do my best—er, quickest—work when I have a deadline. My house is never as clean as when a guest visits. My knitting FOs (Finished Objects) fly off my needles in December.
Through my current reorganizing process, I must manage part of my Stash. Each time I peruse the vaguely-organized shelves and boxes and bags, I sense that I am careening toward my first Destash. I know many others have Destashed before me, but I tend to be a touch apprehensive when it comes to new projects and processes.
I’ll admit that my unease dips into a deeper well. I have spent years referring to my Stash as my version of Prepping for the Apocalypse. Some Preppers have basements full of cans, bags, and tubs of food that will stay fresh for thirty years. Not me…
I Prep Yarn!
I have every intention of being that lady who makes it through the first wave of zombies—or AI robots, or whatever apocalypse-inducing situation—and then trades food and supplies for freshly knit garments! Solid plan, right?
However, I’m starting to question my objective. Why?
UFOs
For once, I don’t mean UnFinished Objects.
I mean extraterrestrial, tall-green-man piloted, flying objects.
You guys. Have you heard the recent news reports?
Gah! It’s enough to make me turn off the tv, shut my curtains, and knit with my head down.
And ok, I get it. All of the claims (so far) are “unconfirmed.” But! I spent my Sunday evenings in high school hoping the Cigarette Smoking Man would be in that night’s episode of The X-Files.
The truth is out there, man!
Fun fact: I designed a colorwork hat a few years back based on Mulder’s office poster. It read, “I want to believe,” and featured bushes and flying saucers! I’m not just a book nerd. I never published it, but now I might reconsider….
Pardon the puckering; I was new to colorwork. 🤷🏻♀️
I have no idea how this UFO situation will pan out, so I plan to carry on as if the stories are fiction. However, from now on when I cull my Stash, I will ask three things:
Will I ever want to knit with this yarn?
Will the skein(s) be a good bargaining chip in the Apocalypse?
Might an alien appreciate a sweater knit from this yarn?
I think I’ll have my bases covered.
How do YOU stash?
